Director General Prisons
The word ‘Prison’ traces its origin to Old French and Roman roots meaning custody or confinement. Historically, prisons have been central to justice and societal reform. Modern prisons are more than confinement spaces; they are institutions dedicated to protecting society through the reformation and rehabilitation of offenders.
Amidst sensational portrayals in media, Delhi Prisons strives to highlight the human side of justice—focusing on rehabilitation, compassion, and transformation. The commitment of staff and partners reflects in the changing narratives of prison life, emphasizing dignity, responsibility, and positive re-entry into society.
With multiple jails under its jurisdiction, Delhi Prisons advances reforms such as legal aid centers, Lok Adalats, and digital systems, reaffirming Tihar Jail Delhi’s mission to reform lives and foster a humane correctional environment.
The primary aim of the Jail Administration is to engage inmates in diverse constructive activities that enhance their skills, reduce stress, and promote self‑reliance, enabling them to earn money while serving their sentence. This holistic approach seeks to transform jails into centers of personal growth and rehabilitation, preparing inmates for a smoother reintegration into society.
To support this objective, a dedicated website is being developed to streamline the collaboration between the jail system and Non‑Governmental Organizations (NGOs). The main purpose of this platform is to create a transparent, efficient, and systematic process for managing NGOs’ participation, ensuring only credible and genuinely committed organizations work with inmates. The website will feature a robust verification module to scrutinize an NGO’s credentials, registration, financial transparency, past performance, and the authenticity of its mission, thereby safeguarding inmates from fraudulent entities.
